Description

Module Content

This module aims to provide academic skills and an introduction to a variety of topics in linguistics.

Teaching Delivery

Teaching is delivered via a weekly two-hour lecture in addition to a one-hour tutorial.

Indicative Topics

Indicative lecture topics are based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes.

We will develop our understanding of foundational concepts, such as mental grammar, language universals, innateness etc. We will explore deep, often interdisciplinary and sometimes controversial questions such as How did language evolve? We will also explore how the key questions in the study of language could be addressed through experimentation. In addition, we will explore and practise the academic skills needed to succeed at university, including research methods, writing skills, and presentation skills.

Module Aims and/or Objectives

The main objectives of the module are: - good understanding of foundational concepts in the study of linguistics; - development of critical thinking and analytical skills through exploration of difficult topics; - development of academic reading and writing (and speaking) skills; - better understanding of ‘big’ questions concerning language and linguistics.
