Description

This module will address the practical, ethical and theoretical aspects of the conservation of Kinetic Art. Students will be introduced to different types of kinetic works and learn about the health and safety challenges involved in their display. By the end of the course students will gain an understanding of the different ways in which these works might fail, and what can be done as preventive measures. Students will also be able to critically assess strategies for the documentation, maintenance and repair of different types of kinetic works. During the course the students will also explore the ethics of different conservation strategies such as replication and controlled activation.

Through their independent study and project work, students will understand how to assess the conservation needs of these works and develop conservation plans that consider the current and future display of kinetic works.
