Description

The clinical training programme will take place over a two-three month period. It will be complemented by the preceding theoretical lectures where aspects of clinical training e.g. complications, airway and cannulation skills will be covered. Another three lecture days will take place in the second teaching block, after the clinical placement. One day will be spent on simulation training in the management of medical emergencies. Clinical cases presented by the students will be discussed. As well as didactic lectures, the content of the module includes problem-based learning, clinical skills workshops and clinical placements. During the clinical placements, students will sedate patients under the direct supervision of experienced and qualified mentors. They will get practical training in pre-sedation assessment, administration of titrated intravenous midazolam, administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen and safe patient recovery and discharge. Students will need to keep a logbook of all cases observed and undertaken during the course. On-going contact with lecturers during and after the course, on a mentor basis, will be encouraged.
