Description

The focus of this module is to build the foundations of your stroke knowledge. We will teach neurovascular neuroanatomy and how this links to the clinical syndromes of stroke. ÌýWe will also teach you commonly used classification schemes and the limitations of these. ÌýThere is a lecture about how flow through the cerebral circulation is maintained when well, diseased and under stress. The consequences of stroke affecting the senses are also covered: vision, hearing and the balance system. We will introduce you to important concepts about intracerebral haemorrhage: causes, consequences and treatment. In preparation for this module we ask you to read the pre course material provided.Ìý

The module objectives are:

  1. To be able to localise a stroke (hemisphere, circulation)
  2. To be able to link stroke location to a clinical syndrome. Ìý
  3. To know common anatomical variants of the brains circulationÌý
  4. Be able to define features in the clinical history which identify common mimics eg seizures, migraine
  5. Evaluate the stroke risk in a patient with TIA
  6. Know which factors modulate cerebral circulation and maintain perfusionÌý
