Description

This module provides an opportunity to interrogate histories of gender and sexuality in Modern Britain through a focus on trans histories.Ìý Introducing students to this rapidly emerging field in gender studies and history, it explores the range of theoretical and historiographical approaches which scholars have taken in studying individuals in the past whose subjectivities and practices have challenged binary notions of gender.Ìý The module will consider gender transgressive practices such as cross-dressing and passing; the relationship between medical discourses and the emergence of trans identities; the creation of trans communities; and the cultural intersections between gender non-conformity and queer and lesbian spaces. Transgender studies is a global field and this module will combine theoretical and methodological insights from a range of geographical and disciplinary backgrounds with an empirical focus on the historical context of Modern Britain.
