Description

This module will provide the basic principles of bioprocess analysis and design. This will be achieved by first introducing students to the concept of whole bioprocess sequences and process flow sheets. Mass balance techniques for the whole bioprocess and for the key unit operations within the bioprocess sequence will then be taught. Other topics covered will include good manufacturing practice, principles of facility design and process mapping and facility analysis.Ìý

Upon completion of the course, a student should be able to:Ìý

  • Apply the principles of mass balances to real life chemical and biochemical engineering problems.Ìý

  • Apply mass balances on unit operations including primary separation (filtration, centrifugation), homogenisation and chromatography.Ìý

  • Analyse and map whole bioprocesses.Ìý

  • Interpret and analyse data including adsorption isotherms.Ìý

  • Apply design principles and define process specifications for different biopharmaceutical process examples.
