Description

This module introduces students to the professional practice of audio description (AD), which helps blind or partially-sighted people enjoy visual entertainment. The areas covered include: legislation, history and present situation of AD, audio describing for children and adults, live versus pre-recorded AD, economic and professional aspects, and the main conventions used in the industry. Through a range of carefully chosen examples and exercises, students will develop confidence and skills in producing scripts for audio description and broaden their awareness of the needs of people with limited access to visual information and the grammatical and syntactic features of the language. Lessons will be shaped and constructed to help you begin, develop and enhance your AD script writing skills, from working on your creativity to writing in a fluid manner that resembles an engaging story. Students will also learn technical skills like timings, writing specifically for a voiceover, and using specialist AD software. The module will feature real-world AD examples and scripting exercises, among other activities, to bring variety to lessons. Please note this module is not language-specific and will be taught solely in English (including all coursework).
