Description

Architectural culture has never been exclusively a product of professionally trained architects. But now more than ever, there are many other people working in related fields who shape debates and ideas around architecture in significant ways. Architectural Research 1 aims to introduce these ‘other’ modes of contributing to architectural knowledge.

The aims and objectives of Architectural Research 1 are to:
• Introduce the different ways and modes in which people working in related fields to architecture can shape debates and ideas around the built environment in significant ways.
• Introduce ‘other’ modes of contributing to architectural knowledge across a range of audiences.
• Encourage students to think critically about the production, use and experience of architecture.
• Develop practical skills in research, reading, writing, editing and presenting.
• Encourage to understand and to develop different ‘voices’ in their writing, from academic to journalistic.

On completion of this module, you should have developed the ability to:
• Undertake research into buildings and spaces.
• Critically analyse architectural data and evidence.
• Present and communicate architectural ideas in a variety of modes, voices and media (print and digital).
• Critically reflect on your own work and on the work of your peers.
• Show a greater awareness of different audiences and to think creatively about how to reach them.
• Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of how images can be used to support these efforts and of what information different kinds of images convey.

There are bi-weekly formative (not marked) assignments throughout the term, which help students develop work towards the final summative portfolio assessment.
