  1. Applications of Biomedical Engineering (MECH0040)

Description

Content:

This module aims to impart knowledge of the latest applications in the wide area of biomedical engineering such as drug delivery, cardiovascular engineering, biophysics, dental materials, and orthopaedic engineering. The lectures are delivered by ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûlecturers and other visiting experts. In the first term, modern manufacturing for healthcare is discussed. This includes the novel making of microbubbles, particles, capsules and fibres. More fundamentally the application of microfluids, electrohydrodynamics in the form of electrospraying and electrospinning and pressure-spinning are discussed. The use of statistics in biomedical engineering and related disciplines are illustrated: (i) Measurements, uncertainty and display of data, (ii) Probability and descriptive statistics, and (iii) Fitting to models and hypothesis testing. Antimicrobial resistance including fundamentals and materials are discussed. The final few lectures in Term 1 are on orthopaedics: Implants, joint replacements, lubrication and wear in joints.

Teaching delivery:

Usually a 2-hour lecture per week.

Indicative Topics:

  • Manufacturing for healthcare.
  • Statistics for biomedical engineering.
  • Antimicrobial studies.
  • Orthopaedics.

Module Objectives:

To elucidate the latest developments in the applications of biomedical engineering and allied subjects.
