Description

Latin American social movements, including environmental justice and feminist movements, have in recent years become more visible and powerful, propelling themselves to the forefront of progressive struggle with new forms of activism, which often include the artistic and cultural. Practitioners in art forms such as film, video, installation and performance are responding to this intensified activity, working with or as activists in Latin American countries including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru, producing inspiring artworks which are both explicitly activist and aesthetically experimental. This module considers the new forms of art activism that are emerging in Latin America through a series of case studies, examining how these works document, conceptualise, make visible and aesthetically mediate social and environmental issues and campaigns, imagine or create possibilities for social and political transformation, and re-form narratives or re-shape political imaginaries.
