What is the IEP?听

The IEP is an听听undergraduate听teaching framework听shared by most 新香港六合彩开奖结果Engineering undergraduate degree programmes. It is听not a programme that you apply to听directly,听so here鈥檚 precisely what it means for you and your chosen degree.听听

The IEP emphasises creativity, communication, interdisciplinarity and teamwork by learning through projects and the social context of engineering. Engineering is about people, and the IEP helps you to explore, build and design engineering solutions that make a difference.听

The IEP is completely embedded in the degree programme of your choice.听When you say yes to 新香港六合彩开奖结果Engineering,听you are also saying yes to听engaging in the听many听innovative IEP听learning听opportunities听endorsed by MIT as听鈥溾.听

At UCL, you听will听specialise听in the areas听of engineering听that excite you the most,听right听from the very听start of your studies.听The IEP approach听allows听you听to听work and learn听beside students from other disciplines听at key points听throughout your first three years of study.听This opportunity to learn from each other and share interests and insights is truly听invaluable.听听

Unique to the IEP, is your chance to personalise your engineering degree. It鈥檚 what makes it fun, challenging and extremely rewarding! You can take three, linked elective modules in a subject area e.g. intelligent systems (AI), environmental engineering and modern application of engineering mathematics. These modules grouped together are known as an IEP Minor Pathway. This won鈥檛 change your degree title, but crucially, it allows you to broaden and customise your 新香港六合彩开奖结果degree.

Each of these听degrees听are either already highly specialised, have input from other UCL听faculties and/or听departments, or are for听particular group听of students (i.e. medical students in the case of听the听Intercalated degree).听

How will I听be taught?听

You will learn in a variety of ways, including:听

  • lectures听听
  • self-study听听
  • real-world听projects through听IEP听Scenarios听and IEP Challenges听
  • laboratories听
  • workshops and听tutorials听
  • career-based facilitation, tutoring and mock employment听activities听
  • group work听听
  • flipped听lectures (you鈥檒l review materials before class as homework so that lesson time is dedicated to听discussion,听interactive听exercises听and听guidance听from your lecturer)听

You will听also听spend time in experimental or computer labs learning key technical skills.听Through听a series of authentic team-based engineering projects,听you鈥檒l听receive听a unique听opportunity听to apply your technical knowledge through the process of engineering design. You may also have the chance to go on field trips听and听work with/be mentored听by our industrial and community partners听听

Why teach in this way?

Good engineering happens when people听with complementary skills听work together to solve problems.听听

We鈥檝e听designed the听IEP teaching framework as a response to the changing nature of听21st听century engineering and industry requirements for innovative, curious graduates who are not only technically brilliant in their chosen discipline, but also:听

  • have a wider knowledge base听
  • are used to working with engineers from other areas as well as听non-engineers听
  • effectively communicate听and promote听their ideas听
  • make听an impact听with听minimum guidance and resource.听

Who will teach me?

Staff听from every 新香港六合彩开奖结果Engineering听department contribute to the IEP.听Most of the听teaching on your IEP modules will be taught by academics from your core programme听department. Interdisciplinary IEP elements are delivered by leading academics from across the听faculty. Our听departmental colleagues embrace a shared attitude towards collaborative, problem-based, creative learning.

Engineering Challenges Module

Who听is this for?听BEng/MEng Biochemical, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electronic & Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students听and听BSc/MEng Computer Science students.听

Engineering Challenges takes place in Term 1 of your first听year, and听comprises two听Challenges听- team projects that last for half a term.听

During these听five-week-long听challenges,听you will work in a team to investigate a problem and create a solution. You听will听have other lectures during this听time, and听will spend听four听hours in class each week on the Challenge.听

The Challenges are themed around broad issues which have a global impact, taken from the 新香港六合彩开奖结果Grand Challenges topics听e.g.听sustainability听and听global health.听

Challenge 1听-听is discipline-specific听and听taught by your听鈥榟ome鈥櫶鼶epartment. Your team will听consist听of students from your programme cohort. The aim of this Challenge is听to give听you further insights into cutting-edge innovations within your chosen discipline.听听听听听

Challenge 2听-听is听multidisciplinary. You will work with students from different engineering听disciplines, and听be taught by academics in partnered听departments. This Challenge gives you a chance to work with students from another discipline on a 鈥榬eal-world鈥 project.听On the first year interdisciplinary Challenge project, each discipline has a distinct part to play, becoming truly effective when working in conjunction with other disciplines.听听

"The unique components introduced by the IEP - for example, Challenges and How to Change The World -听gave me early exposure听to working in teams comprising of individuals from different disciplines and backgrounds. The various activities helped me work on my leadership skills in multidisciplinary environments, where it was crucial to be able bridge the gaps in knowledge between members in order to complete given tasks. This experience helped me stand out as a candidate when applying to summer internships or work placements."

Design & Professional Skills I & II Modules

Who听is this for?听BEng/MEng Biochemical, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electronic & Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students听and听BSc/MEng Computer Science students.听

Design and Professional Skills, or听DPS, takes听place in Terms 1听and听2 of your first and second year.听The module听includes a special project in your first week 鈥 the听brilliant听Pebble in the Pond.听听

DPS is taught in discipline cohorts 鈥 so you study with your programme peers. Everyone studies听much of the same materials and curriculum, with听plenty of discipline-specific adjustments taught听with real-life examples.听听听

In DPS, you鈥檒l learn about听communications听鈥 and why this is so important to engineers 鈥撎ethics, teamwork听and听leadership, the听engineering design cycle听and听technical skills听specific to your chosen degree programme, such as听engineering drawing and CAD (computer-aided design), programming听and听risk assessments.听听听

Design & Professional Skills includes听Scenarios听鈥 week-long team projects where all your other lectures stop, and you have one focus:听a team-based technical engineering design project. Scenarios are taught by your听department, and听give you the opportunity to apply your Design & Professional Skills knowledge to issues relating to your subject area. Scenarios also give you a real insight into how engineers work. This听experience helps you听to听stand apart听from听engineering students听at competing universities. Our students say that Scenarios are intense, but they love them!听

"You have a whole real-life project, and you鈥檙e expected to complete it by the Friday [having only been given it the Monday before]. It鈥檚 challenging because it鈥檚 a lot of work, and initially, especially on the Monday you鈥檙e a bit everywhere. But by the end of the week you get to see a project come together, and I think that鈥檚 really exciting."
Zara, BEng Chemical Engineering, 2018

IEP Minor Modules

Studying an IEP Minor is compulsory.听听

The IEP Minor pathway allows you to choose either a completely different subject area,听听or an in-depth study of an aspect of your own discipline.听Many of the IEP Minors are either aligned with cutting-edge 新香港六合彩开奖结果Engineering Research or innovations in industrial engineering sectors.听

Please note:听the IEP Minors do not currently change your degree title.听

What is the IEP Minor?听

The IEP Minor is unique in UK engineering education.听These are听a听set听of three modules grouped听together.听You鈥檒l听take听one module in your second year, and two modules in your third year.听听

The IEP Minor听Pathway听enables you to customise your chosen engineering degree programme, follow your passions and gain insight into specific engineering sectors. Such experience really will听give you听an advantage in a competitive jobs market.听

Prior to听the IEP Minor听Pathway, timetable clashes meant picking electives was difficult for our students. By grouping elective modules together, we have allowed students to gain in-depth knowledge of certain subject areas听and听ensure听timetable issues are听reduced.听

One of the best听things about each IEP听Minor听is that听you'll听work and learn with students from other听disciplines, building your interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary knowledge.听

You can find out more on the IEP Minor Pathways available to students starting their second year of studies听this autumn听in the video below.听Individual听IEP Minor听Pathways听may be withdrawn or added in subsequent years.听

Who is this for?听BEng/MEng Biochemical, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electronic & Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students, BSc/MEng Computer Science students, BSc/MSci听Management Science students.听

MEng Mechanical Engineering with Business Finance students do not have an IEP Minor choice option.听The听Business Finance听element already allows you to customise your degree.听

If you take an MEng, and choose to take your third year abroad, you may not be able to complete your third year IEP Minor modules.听听听听听

We have tried to make every IEP Minor available to everyone, but there are some prerequisites听and exclusions听which will be explained to you in your first year. If your core degree programme already covers the subject area, you will not be able to take the corresponding IEP Minor. Some IEP Minors may require certain A-levels, or equivalent.听听

What is the IEP Minor听selection听process?听

At the end of your听first year,听you听express听your 1st and 2nd choice of IEP Minor听Pathway.听At the start of your听second year,听you confirm听your choice.听

鈥淢y IEP Minor in Engineering and Public Policy allows me to analyse the impact of technology from a political standpoint and how it fits in the policy sphere. While my degree equips me with the technical understanding of a certain technology, my IEP Minor opens up my horizons, encourages me to think beyond normal engineering assumptions and ultimately understand how power and influence work.鈥

How to Change the World听

Who听is this for?听BEng/MEng Biochemical, Biomedical, Chemical, Electronic & Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students, BSc/MEng Computer Science students听and听BSc/MSci听Management Science students (plus other students not on IEP programmes).听听

How to Change the World听is听a听unique, intensive, two-week听team-based听project听that听requires our听students to develop creative and technically robust solutions to 21st-century global challenges.听听The projects are supported by industrial partners and often have government involvement. It is taken at the end of your second year and is considered to be the 鈥榞rand finale鈥 to the set of eight IEP projects (i.e. Challenges and Scenarios) that are at the core of the first two years at 新香港六合彩开奖结果Engineering.听

How to Change the World is run by听UCL听STEaPP听(Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy), and emphases the social context of engineering. It听provides听another opportunity for problem-based learning听by听solving problems whilst working in听teams, and听applying your knowledge as you're learning it. It is so much more than just another project! It gives you the chance to set yourself apart and work on an听interdisciplinary project that鈥檚 aligned with the听. Working in facilitated workshops with industry听and/or community partners, your听team听will plan and design an engineering solution to听a socially complex real听issue听assigned to you.听On the final day, you鈥檒l听pitch to a panel of academics and external and internal (UCL) experts. In recent years, our prestigious external partners have included the UK Government Department for Transport, ARUP, Engineers without Borders UK, Motorola Solutions and Lloyds Banking Group.

"The IEP has played a fundamental role in building my teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills, especially through Scenario weeks and How to Change the World. I have had the opportunity to apply my engineering knowledge to real-world problems, and to propose innovative solutions. This has been enjoyable, and has helped to expand my creative side by allowing me to think听outside the box."
Simran, MEng Chemical Engineering, 3rd year听

Beyond The Curriculum听

As well as studying the above modules and projects 鈥 which all include some form of assessment 鈥 as a 新香港六合彩开奖结果Engineering student on a programme that follows the IEP, you鈥檒l come across additional elements that aren鈥檛 part of the curriculum as such, but are still important, and will still influence your student journey.听

Strengths Finder听

Learning about yourself while you are at university, is such a key part in graduating as the engineer. From your very first day, we encourage you to start thinking about the type of engineer that you want to be, and how your strengths can contribute positively to your development. As an undergraduate engineering student, you will find yourself studying, working and possibly living in new environments and with people who are outside your usual friendship groups. You will be expected to develop your communication skills so that you can effectively give or receive instructions, collaborate with your peers and interact with your academic tutor or an industrial client. All of which, we understand can be challenging.听

That鈥檚 why the IEP introduces the听to first year听students听in the first week of听term.听CliftonStrengths听helps develop self-awareness and provides you with a vocabulary听to听sensitively explore and discuss how people听may听inspire or frustrate you. This is exceptionally useful when it comes to working in teams 鈥 in university,听and also听in industry.听

. The tool provides a set of descriptions that help each person understand how they think, connect with others and get things done. Through the IEP鈥檚 active learning approach, we help you听to听reflect on how you achieve, and through this reflection you will learn to appreciate and value different styles of contribution听to work.听听

The IEP works with a Certified Strengths Coach who supports our teaching and learning staff to get the most out of this programme.听
